We put the word on the front of the building. Soteria. It is worth knowing exactly what we are claiming when we say it, because the word carries more weight than most people expect.
In the Greek of the New Testament, soteria means salvation, but also deliverance, rescue, preservation and safety. It is the word you would use for a man pulled out of the water, and the word you would use for a city spared. It is not a religious abstraction. It is what happens when someone who could not save himself is saved by someone who could.
The rescue was never theoretical
Scripture does not present salvation as a change of opinion. It presents it as a rescue with a cost, carried out by a person, at a place, on a day. That is why the cross sits at the centre of everything we teach here — not as a symbol of suffering in general, but as the moment the rescue was paid for.
Notice the two halves of that verse. Saved, and come to the knowledge of the truth. Salvation is not the end of the matter; it is the beginning of learning. A rescued man still has to be taught how to live on dry land.
What it means for this house
If soteria is a rescue, then three things follow for us, and they shape the week:
- We pray like people who believe God actually saves, not like people going through a form.
- We teach the Word plainly, because the rescued need the knowledge of the truth, not opinions.
- We go out, because a rescue that stays indoors is not a rescue anyone else hears about.
A church named for salvation has to behave like one. The name is a promise we keep to the city, not decoration on a sign.
So when you see the word over the door, read it as an invitation and a claim at the same time. The invitation: whoever you are, there is room. The claim: God will have all men saved and come to the knowledge of the truth, and we intend to spend ourselves on that end.
